NINE times Comrades Marathon winner, Bruce Fordyce (below) launched his latest book, Winged Messenger, running your first Comrades Marathon, at the Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust (HACT) recently.
Described as a guide specifically for those looking to run their first Comrades Marathon, Winged Messenger shares Fordyce’s 1976/77 training diary so that raw novices and experienced runners alike can follow the journey he took to his first Comrades.

In animated detail, the book describes how the running legend took his first stumbling, rudimentary steps and how, as an ordinary runner, he began to understand the demands of the world’s oldest and largest ultramarathon. He documents his mistakes, successes and, ultimately, his progress towards his first iconic win in May 1977.
Fordyce said he enjoyed meeting and chatting to the local runners about his new book and that he was pleased to have the opportunity to support HACT and the wonderful work the organisation does in KZN.
