Pinetown couple share 50 years of selfless love
Glyde and Edna Mitchell will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on Saturday, 10 April.
GLYDE Sean and Edna Florence Mitchell celebrate 50 years of selfless love as the local couple tied the knot on 10 April in 1971.
They first met in Hillbrow where Edna was staying with two friends. Glyde popped around one day for a visit and Edna admitted she was quite rude during their first meeting but fondly remembers thinking, “He was quite a nice chap.”
Months passed and they met up again at a dance and the sparks flew between them.
“No numbers were exchanged, however Glyde’s eye was caught and he visited again a few nights later,” said Edna.
Edna had a boat trip planned with her girl friends in 1970 but wondered what would happen if she fell in love before then.
She reassured her friends she was definitely going. Fast forward a few months and the two love birds were captivated with one another and Edna skipped the boat trip.
They were engaged that same year and tied the knot in 1971 in Zimbabwe.

The couple celebrate their wedding anniversary on 10 April, five days later marks Glyde’s 75th birthday and on 22 April Edna will also turn 75.
“April is their month. Every year we tell friends and family we cannot see them in April as we are celebrating with our folks. They cannot believe that their special life events are within days of each other,” said one of their three daughters, Tammy Grove.
The couple have four grandchildren who they love dearly.
Glyde followed God’s calling into ministry, he has a great passion for gardening and enjoys growing his own vegetables. He loves to cycle and, when he gets the chance, enjoys a good body surf.
Edna said she was chosen to care for the sick and never in her wildest dreams did she think she would work her last year during a global pandemic. She loves to bake, sew, read a good book and watch a game of rugby. Her door, she said, was always open for a freshly brewed cup of coffee and a chin wag.
“Mom and dad, you have blessed us with a home filled with love, memories, happiness, and laughter. Thank you for showing us how to love,” said their daughters Leigh- Anne Mitchell, Cheryl Mackinnon and Tammy.
