Pinetown magistrate sentences Molweni man to life for rape of 6-year-old

The man was found guilty of the rape which occurred in January 2018.

A 47-year-old man from Molweni, near Hillcrest, has been given a life sentence by Magistrate Queen Khuzwayo in the Pinetown Regional court after being found guilty of raping the six-year-old daughter of a neighbour in January 2018.

Bafana Mkhize, the court heard, had pulled the child into his house before raping her. “He told her not to report the incident to anyone,” said National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) KZN, provincial spokesperson, Natasha Kara.

“However, the child, who also lived in the same neighbourhood told her mother and they reported the matter to the police. The child then pointed out the man to the police and he was arrested,” said Kara.

“The victim was taken to the Thuthuzela Care Centre at the RK Khan Hospital where she received post-trauma assistance,” confirmed Kara.

The child, due to her being so young, used anatomical dolls to convey her testimony which Regional Court Prosecutor, Zibuyile Zuma led along with the testimony of the victim’s mother, aunt and the medical doctor.

Victim impact statement

Part of the prosecution’s evidence included a victim impact statement, facilitated by the Court Preparation Officer, Bonnie Mthethwa and compiled by the child. In the statement the child said that she still experienced sleepless nights and flashbacks.

“The NPA welcomed the sentence and conviction in the matter,” confirmed Kara this week about the sentence which was delivered last week.
