Locals flock to support Pinetown hair salon crippled by break-in
A pair of scissors, a blow dryer and towels have been donated to the salon owner.
RESIDENTS have flocked to try and help a local hairdresser recover after thousands of Rands of equipment were stolen from her Pinetown-based salon during a recent robbery.
Pinetown hairdresser, Gaylynne Anderson said she was distraught when she entered her salon last Tuesday morning and found it ransacked.
According to reports, a group of men removed the tiles from the roof of the building before they kicked in the ceiling board to gain access to the site.
ProAct Neighbourhood Watch’s community coordinator, Andreas Mathios, said it was vagrants who entered the stand-alone salon building.
“Hairdressing equipment, including heavy duty hair dryers, hairdresser combs and professional scissors, which are valued at more than R5 000 each, were taken,” said Mathios.
There were 120 towels in the salon and she was left with nine.
All of her shampoo and conditioner as well as sentimental items were taken.
The thieves opened each one of the cupboards and drawers and threw the contents onto the floor.
“There was a wig in the salon that belonged to one of my friends who passed away from cancer,” she said.
Anderson said they completely cleared her out and, as she is not insured, would not be able to recover from the robbery.
“At 60, I cannot afford to go and just take out a loan to replace all of the stolen items and repair the damage done,” said the business owner. “It’s going to cost me a fortune to repair and replace what was stolen. I honestly don’t know how someone is supposed to find the money to start getting your business going.”
Since the robbery, members from across the Highway area have gathered to show their support and scissors, an industrial hairdryer and towels have been donated.
The men fled into a nearby green strip and are still at large.
“Criminals are making their escape into the green strip on Leeds Crescent We have, for many years complained about it. We find it unacceptable that there is no accountability for this piece of land, let alone the authorities that are mandated to keep this area clean,” said Mathios.
