On the day the shelter, for homeless and destitute men, will also host an environmentally friendly and sustainable market.
“All residents have undergone waste and recycling training which was held at the site and sponsored by Oricol Environmental Services and they cannot wait to transform their shipping container into the drop off site for the surrounding community,” said the Ark’s manager, George Pretorius.
From Saturday, 27 February 2021, The Ark KZN will be able to accept recyclables cardboard, office paper, newspaper, magazines, cans, glass, plastic (all types including empty shampoo and detergent bottles), used cooking oil, used motor oil, electronic waste which include old printers, towers, keyboards and laptops (excluding batteries and fluorescent tubes).

Pretorius urged the public to support their new venture adding that clothing donations are welcome and always needed as well as any old usable furniture.
“The Ark KZN’s residents will sort all these recyclable items into categories and will receive a rebate per kg for all recyclable items.
“This initiative means that they can receive a small income from recycling generated and received from their site and from the community,” said Pretorius.
He said this is an exciting step for The Ark KZN as they generate a vast amount of waste and recycling on site currently.
The public is invited to come through to the open day. On the day, people can take their recycling, enjoy the eco-market, the nursery and there is a restaurant which sells delicious food.
Pretorius thanked all the companies and individuals who sponsored items to create this new sustainable venture.
The Ark is situated at 1 Sterkspruit Road in Cliffdale. People can contact Pretorius on 062 756 9601 or email admin@thearkkzn.co.za.
