4m Python caught in Camperdown

The large Python caught a goat on the property when it was found by a group of farm workers.

LOCAL snake rescuer, Nick Evans raced off to a farm in Camperdown to rescue a 4m Python as it was alleged the workers planned to kill and eat it.

Evans said the snake was discovered by a group of farm workers when they went to investigate a goat ‘screaming’.

They found the snake constricting the goat. The farm owner was contacted to inform him of his loss and for a plan forward.

Initially thought to be a prank call, Evans said he could not believe his eyes when he received the photos of the snake.

“I told him to tell his staff to keep away from it and not kill it and explained that, legally, they could get into big trouble for killing it,” said Evans.

The snake was found in a grassland near the farm road. He grabbed the snake by its tail and, even though he was unable to see much else in the tall grass, Evans could tell it was a sizeable snake.

“It was trying to get away and I tried to hold onto the immensely powerful, slippery body. I was struggling! Plus, I needed to get to the head, but how? It looked a little like I was walking a dog as I was walking with the snake as it moved,” said Evans.

With some help, Evans was able to release the tail and grab the large Python’s head. Evans said the reptile measured in at 4m long and weighed 27.6kg.

“As beautiful as it is, it poohed all over us, and the smell was just horrific. It’s like a combo of rotten fish and dead animal. And it’s hard to get rid of!” exclaimed Evans.

“To sell or kill this species is illegal as it is a protected species. I am so grateful to the farm owner for calling me and from telling his staff not to kill it and I’m grateful they didn’t. The snake has been released into a beautiful area, full of game, not goats,” he said.
