Bellair SAPS investigates video of police officers wrestling man near Arundel Gardens

The video of two officers trying to arrest a man near Arundel Gardens has attracted a wide range of comments on the original post.

A VIDEO of alleged police brutality featuring two Bellair policemen arresting a man has gone viral.

The video, which came to light over the weekend, has divided public opinion with some alleging that the man should not have resisted arrest, while others insisted the police used unnecessary force to try and arrest the man while also failing to explain why he was being arrested.

Bellair SAPS station commander, Lieutenant Colonel Rajan Ramchunder has since confirmed that the incident would not be ignored.

“An  investigation into the incident has been initiated and the outcomes thereof will be accordingly communicated,” he said on Wednesday, 13 January.

The Queensburgh News is in possession of the video.

According to the poster, the incident took place at Arundel Gardens in Hillary.

In the video, which is more than four minutes long, a struggle ensues between the two policemen and the alleged suspect.

The situation intensifies as bystanders start objecting to the alleged arrest.

At one point, one of the officers can be seen punching the man, while he tries to resist arrest, and even seems to pepper spray the man

Bystanders repeatedly shout that the alleged suspect did nothing wrong while the officers repeatedly instruct the man to put his hands behind his back.

The bystanders also alleged that proper Covid-19 regulations were not adhered to during the incident.

“This officer is not even wearing a mask properly,” alleged one of the bystanders in the small crowd.

Near the end of the video the situation escalates once again as one of the two policemen draws his weapon and shouts at one of the bystanders to drop a garden spade.

It is unclear if the policemen managed to arrest the alleged suspect and if there had been any other arrests.

Attempts to contact a family member of one of the police officers, who also shared the video, have been unsuccessful.
