uBhejane Xtreme kicks off with three-day ride

Even if you have not signed up for the event, readers can still make a donation towards the two worthy causes the race supports.

THE 3-Day Ride in the uBhejane Xtreme MTB Challenge will kick off from Hillcrest today (Thursday, 10 December) and riders will head to Bonamanzi on the KZN North Coast.

The event is a crucial fundraiser for rhino conservation in KwaZulu-Natal as it has, in the last six years, raised more than R2 million for the cause.

The money is donated to Project Rhino and Helping Rhinos, two organisations that work in the Zululand area.

The focus is on rhino poaching awareness, education and prevention. uBhejaneX helps fund four different divisions of Project Rhino. Money raised goes to the ZapWing, K9 Unit, Horse Unit and the Rhino Art initiative, as well as ranger training, community engagement, thermal imaging equipment and the rhino orphanage.

The three-day ride will take the participants from Hillcrest through the Inanda Valley.

They will travel along a number of the back roads and sugar cane roads to the first stop in Zinkwazi. The first day’s ride is more than 140km.

Riders will spend 120km in the saddle on day two as they head to the second overnight stop at the Canefields Country Hotel in Empangeni.

The third and final day of the event is the another challenging push.

Participants will ride 130km and traverse the iSimangaliso Wetland Park and eventually finish at Bonamanzi Camp.

The three-day ride precedes the four other rides that will take place on Saturday, 12 December. uBhejane Xtreme’s flagship ride, the 350km Long Horn begins in Hillcrest before midnight on Friday, 11 December, the 270km Short Horn starts at the Umvoti Toll Plaza at about 1am, the 130km Baby Horn will start in Empangeni at Canefields at 8am. The shortest ride, the Orphan, is a 60km stretch from Monzi to the finish at Bonamanzi and starts at about 12pm.
