Kloof SPCA rescues two distressed dogs from extreme heat in Inanda Valley

Investigations revealed that the dogs were chained in the open field to protect a vegetable garden.

TWO dogs were recently rescued by the Kloof and Highway SPCA after they were found tied up to running chains in an open field in Inanda Valley.

The dogs, which are now under the SPCA’s care, were spotted by a mountain biker early last month on an extremely hot and humid day.

According to Brigitte Ferguson from the SPCA, the dogs had no shelter and no visible food or water.

She said the mountain biker could not get access to the property to see if there was any sign of water.

“According to the biker, the dogs did appear thin and scared and they were clearly distressed and had managed to dig holes in order to protect themselves from the elements.”

After the incident was reported Inspector Petros Simanane located the animals and went about investigating who was responsible for this “unacceptable situation”, said the organisation.

“It turned out the dogs were there to protect a community run vegetable garden. The owner of the dogs did not even stay on the property.

“Simamane issued a 24 hour warning and after leaving adequate food and water he left only to return the next day to meet with the owner and confirm if any changes had been made,” said Ferguson.

After much persuasion, Inspector Petra Abrahams and Simamane managed to get the owner to sign the dogs over to The Kloof and Highway SPCA.

Ferguson said inspectors explained to the owner that this is not an acceptable situation and the quality of life the dogs had was shocking.

“Much to the amazement of the inspectors, who had anticipated the dogs would be very apprehensive, the two dogs were gentle and craved affection.

“They will never be on a chain again and the next time there is a 40 degree day they will know they have shade to escape to,” said Ferguson.
