Two black mambas caught in Westville

One of them was found in a car at a mall in the Westville area yesterday evening.

TWO of the deadly reptiles were caught in two separate incidents in the Westville area yesterday evening (5 November).

Local snake catcher, Nick Evans was contacted to retrieve what he was told was a small snake from a bathroom.

He thought it could have been a spotted bush snake or a brown house snake.

“The homeowner heard something moving by her sink. She looked and saw a snake slither behind the mirror. She saw the tail sticking out and wanted to pull it out. Brave lady. She said she was a ‘farm girl’,” said Evans.

He found the snake tucked between the wall and a small drawer on the bathroom counter.

The snake, which measured about 1m in length, was simple to pin down and catch.

In another incident, Evans received multiple phone calls regarding a black mamba found in the parking lot of a mall in Westville.

As he wasn’t close by, he notified his friend Nick Saunders.

“It had gone into a car and, after much searching, he couldn’t find it,” said Evans, who then contacted Rob Prece from Dubcorp.

“Despite being after hours, he welcomed the idea of the car being brought over as he has helped me twice with mambas in cars.”

Evans met everyone on site and each place a snake could hide was checked.

“We were literally giving up when rob took one last look and spotted it above the wheel arch,” said Evans.

The snake was said to be about 1.5m but, when it was retrieved, was measured in at 2.3m.

“Obviously snakes don’t live around the mall, so it must have caught a ride in someone’s car,” he said.
