Off grid water on horizon for Ethelbert child centre
Ethelbert Child and Youth Care Centre plans to move off the grid to pour more funding into other avenues.
MOVING off the grid by installing alternative sources of water and electricity can have a big impact on the bottom line of any household.
This is no more in evidence than when one considers how much water a non-profit organisation which cares for children, like Ethelbert Child and Youth Care Centre, goes through each month.
According to Nazley Giquel, fundraising and marketing manager for the facility, the plan to take the home off the grid has been something director of the home, Vanessa Theophilus, has been keeping in mind for more than a couple of years.

While the installation of solar panels was completed before Theophilus took over as director of Ethelbert in 2017, it was just the first in a series of steps the facility implemented not just to cut costs, but also to decrease harm to the environment.
Climate change as a reality is a bitter pill society is finding hard to swallow, so leading by example in a centre for children, is nothing short of inspirational, but simply the way Ethelbert gets things done.
The centre prides itself in leading the way and setting the bar high for the best practices in similar facilities.
This is also apparent in the way it has aligned itself to international goals of sustainable development in its Life Skills programme.
”Comprised of over eight activities and aligned to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), our Life Skills programme is a platform for our children to build their capacity in various areas, one of which is ‘sustainable agriculture’ under the Zero Hunger SDG,” explained Giquel in the newsletter which is sent to subscribers and supporters regularly.
