The Highway Mail hosted a blood drive at its offices to assist the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) as their blood stocks are still low.

Last week, Chief Operations Officer, Ravi Reddy said the shortage of blood is caused by the scarcity of mobile blood drive venues.

SANBS appealed to healthy, eligible blood donors to donate and help prevent blood shortages.

In order to donate blood a donor has to be

– between the ages of 16 – 65

– weigh over 50 kg

– have a light meal before donating

– and most importantly lead a sexually safe and healthy lifestyle.
