Dog, mauled twice, on its way to recovery at Hillcrest vet

The small female dog was attacked by three large boerboels in the second attack.

JESSIE, a four-year-old dog, is now in recovery at a local veterinary practice and recovering from being mauled by three large dogs in Shallcross.

She was taken to the Hillcrest Veterinary Hospital by the Bothas Hill-based Animal Antics Pet Rescue NPC, after a second attack, and her vet bill is sitting at R8 534.

According to one of the directors of the organisation, Sam De Wet, Jessie was first mauled about two weeks ago.

She was found on the side of the road and taken in by a kind resident.

She was treated and healing, and was to be re-homed when she was attacked – for a second time – by three large dogs.

“This poor girl just can’t catch a break,” said De Wet.

She had four big bites that needed to be stitched up and, as per the vet, Jessie had a small fracture to the right fibula and an obvious hernia on the abdominal wall and intestine, and was placed on the necessary medication before she was operated on.

On Sunday, 27 September Jessie went into theatre and the vet repaired three abdominal hernias from the attack.

“Luckily, her intestines where not punctured or damaged in the attack. Her wounds have been cleaned and she has three drains. There was a lot of fluid under the skin,” said De Wet.

Jessie will remain at the vet for a few more days while she recovers from surgery.

“We are so grateful for everyone’s support and the love and light you have sent Jessie’s way,” she said.
