“Mike is gone” Hillcrest man dies in hospital following N3 accident

THOSE close to Hillcrest resident, Mike Van Rooyen (32) have expressed gratitude for all the prayers and support the greater Highway community has sent to them, even though Mike did not wake from his coma as they had hoped.

Van Rooyen lost consciousness during a late night accident on the N3 on Monday following the tragic accident involving 10 vehicles. 

He underwent surgery last week on Tuesday to remove part of his skull to relieve pressure on his brain.  And was in a medically induced coma following the surgery.

Sadly Van Rooyen never woke and tests showed no brain activity. 

His partner, Kayla Rix updated all who had been praying and showing support with a short statement on Heritage Day in which she thanked everyone for their prayers.

“It is with the deepest and most devastating sadness that I have to say that our precious Mikey is no longer with us,” she said.

“His brain had been showing no sign of activity for a few days and his body shut down this morning.”

“I’m intensely thankful that he was in no pain and that we were given the chance to at least see his beautiful face a few times before he went to Heaven,” she added.

Rix also asked that people continue to pray for the Van Rooyen family at what is a very difficult time for them.

Mike is survived by his parents, Mike and Michele Van Rooyen, and his two younger brothers, Martin and Vihann Van Rooyen.
