VIDEO: Queensburgh boy describes how badly the river stinks

The community have managed to collect the required amount to have the stinky air tested.

THE uMbilo River is once again off-colour according to residents who report on it daily on the uMbilo River Watch chat group.

In July, Queensburgh News reported on the campaign to bring attention in parliament to the plight of the river spearheaded by environmental activist and residents in the greater Queensburgh area who had formed an action group.

Queensburgh News visited the river below Phillips Road last week.

There Sandra Streak and her son, Tyler, described how they are now taking regular samples of the water for testing at a private laboratory with the help of environmental group Adopt-A-River and Janet Simkins.

Stench

In addition to the campaign against the pollution of the river, residents in Queensburgh have also decided to have an independent study of the air quality surrounding the Waste Water Treatment Works upstream of the community. They hope this will help them understand why they are smelling such a stench emanating from the river.

Simkins, who is overseeing the collection for the air testing, said on Thursday 3 September that there was still just over R2 000 still needed but by Tuesday, 8 September she confirmed the needed amount had been reached.
