Ella creates hope with feeding project

Thomas More College's primary school SPAR Star of the Month - August 2020.

THOMAS More College’s primary school SPAR Star of the Month is Grade 7 learner, Ella Randle because of her generous donations to the A Jar of Hope drive.

Ella was keen to become involved in a project to help feed families that had fallen on hard times and had no food to feed themselves or even their children.

Her mom, Fiona Braithwaite, said, “We called upon our local community for empty coffee jars and assistance in donating ingredients for A Jar of Hope.”

The family received a great response and dozens of empty jars, ingredients and a few monetary donations were made.

Each jar contains one cup of rice, one soup mix, one cup of lentils, one unwrapped stock cube and one packet of soup powder. One cup of each ingredient, a tea spoon of salt fills a coffee jar. The contents of the jar added to 2.5 litres of water will make enough food to feed a family of four.

The first batch of 50 jars was donated to the Hillcrest Aids Centre Trust, which support families in the Valley of 1000 Hills.

“We have since assisted families that have been in need in the Waterfall, Emolweni and Mariannhill communities.”We will continue to make up Jars of Hope and distribute to families for as long as there is a need,” said Fiona.

With the help of the public, the family said they would like to keep its feeding scheme going. To assist, you can either donate ingredients or empty glass coffee jars or make a monetary donation that will be sued to purchase the needed ingredients. Contact Fiona on 072 415 4042.
