State of Ashley Cemetery shocks Pinetown mom

Bianca Coulonval has appealed to the municipality to do something about the litter and branches lying around the cemetery.

THE extent of litter and tree branches lying around at the Ashley Cemetery has shocked a Pinetown mother, Bianca Coulonval.

Coulonval witnessed what she described as the atrocious state when she went to clean up her late daughter’s grave on Sunday, 16 August.

She said she was shocked to see the lack of maintenance.

“The graves around my daughter’s grave had collapsed, not sure if they have been vandalised.”

She said on the day she visited the cemetery, there were piles of empty water bottles and rubbish almost everywhere.

“Piles of branches and other garden refuse were left along the fence.”

The concerned Coulonval said this is a complete and total disregard for the dead and their families.

In the old section, a massive tree has fallen onto about 20 graves.

“The tree has been lying there for months, it has never been cut up and disposed,” she said.

Together with her eight-year-old daughter, Coulonval said they spent two hours cleaning around her late daughter’s grave, moving heavy branches and broken tombstones pieces that were strewn all over the place.

Coulonval pointed out that there were municipal workers sitting around, “they were just watching us, they did not offer any assistance.”

She also asked families of loved ones whose graves are at the Ashley Cemetery to go on check on their graves.

“I hope that the municipality can do something about it. The cemetery is a sacred place which should be respected and looked after,” she said.

The municipality did not respond at the time of going to print.
