Cops crack fake document syndicate in Pinetown

Three suspects, between the ages of 38 and 44, were arrested for fraud, perjury and possession of crystal meth.

POLICE made a major breakthrough after following up on information on fraudulent activities that were being conducted at a flat in Ashley, Pinetown.

During the search by the Metro Police Street Crime Unit, SAPS and Provincial Crime Unit three foreigners were arrested with police clearance certificates, refugee permits, fake international driving licences and South African visas, said Metro police spokesperson, Snr Supt Parboo Sewpersad. 

Sewpersad said the city’s Street Crime Unit acted proactively upon receiving a tip-off about the fraudulent activities at the flat.

According to the spokesperson, a small quantity of drugs were also recovered. 

“Fake international driving licences, fake South African visas, police clearance certificates and fake refugee permits were all being printed on the premises,” said Sewpersad.

He added that border post stamps and international government stamps were also found in the flat.

Pinetown Cluster communications officer, Capt Bongumusa Manqele confirmed the incident and said three suspects between the ages of 38 and 44 were arrested for fraud, perjury and possession of crystal meth.
