3 Durban fashionistas claim top 10 spots in Vodacom Durban July Young Designer Award

Despite the lockdown, local fashion students took on the task of creating stunning outfits for the Vodacom Durban July Young Designer Awards.

THREE design students from the Durban University of Technology are among the top 10 finalists in the Vodacom Durban July Young Designer Award, presented by Durban Fashion Fair.

The competition has, traditionally, been the domain of Durban fashion colleges, but this year the Durban University of Technology and the Lindiwe Khuzwayo Academy of Fashion were only able to secure six of the top 10 places while the Pietermaritzburg School of Fashion claimed four of the coveted spots.

“It has been a very difficult year for the student designers, with the technikons and colleges closed under the lockdown,” said fashion programme director, Tiffany Prior. “During lockdown, we have been aware of the enthusiasm among the students and the immense importance they place on the competition, which has helped kick-start the careers of numerous well-known names in the local fashion industry.

The winner will be announced at the end of a virtual fashion show at Hollywoodbets Greyville Racecourse on Tuesday, 25 August.

The 10 finalists of the Vodacom Durban July Young Designer Award are Esme Tibinyane, Nomathemba Dlamini, Nelisa Ndlovu, Mamello Putsoane (Pietermaritzburg School of Fashion), Silungile Dlamini, Goodness Sithole, Caleb Moodley (Durban University of Technology), Namisa Mavuma, Ayanda Khoza and Thandeka Mthembu (Lindiwe Khuzwayo Academy of Fashion).
