The Vodacom Durban July fashion show must go on!

As with the Vodacom Durban July, the accompanying fashion show will go ahead.

PLANS  have been finalised for the completion of the Vodacom Durban July Young Designer Award competition, an event that has become synonymous with the annual raceday.

The event is traditionally hosted in the months that lead up to the raceday and the winners are usually announced during the event.

The initial judging will now take place on Monday, 17 August and the final adjudication phase wille take place on Tuesday, 25 August.

“This competition is such an important opportunity for the next generation of fashion designer stars. We simply had to find a way to make it happen this year,” said the fashion programme director, Tiffany Prior.

“In this difficult year it would have been easy to cancel this competition, like so many other things have been cancelled. Instead, Gold Circle’s response was ‘how can we do this?’” she added.

With most colleges and technikons under lockdown, the challenge was to create a practical structure for the initial judging process.

The Durban University of Technology’s Sunthra Moodley said the competition is a key part of DUT’s student designers’ syllabus.

“DUT has been fortunate to be part of this event for many years, first with our third-year students and, in recent years, with our second year-students,” says Moodley. “We have had students win the Vodacom Durban July Young Designer Award and we have also had graduates win in the other categories of the competition.”

The first round of judging will be held at the Hollywoodbets Greyville Racecourse and 20 finalists will be chosen for the semi-finals, hosted later on that day.

Ten finalists will go on to showcase their outfits in a virtual show on Tuesday, 25 August and the winner will be announced.
