SA band, Black Wiskey takes a shot at virtual fundraiser

South African band, Black Wiskey will be hosting a virtual fundraiser to show support to several pubs who are feeling the strain with the ongoing lockdown restrictions.

BUSINESSES within the food and leisure industry have been severely affected by the national lockdown, and our favourite pubs are no exception.

It is for this reason that South African band, Black Wiskey will be hosting a Facebook live session, Black Wiskey For the Pubs to raise funds for a few of their favourite pubs.

The band’s vocalist and lead guitarist, Phillip du Plessis said while he and his band mates, Estiaan Fritze (bass guitarist) and Kelvin Bland (drummer) are fortunate enough to still have their day jobs, they were aware some people, who work at the pubs they had performed at over the years, will or already had lost their jobs due to the lockdown and its regulations.

“We felt it in our hearts, after our last live stream, that we can try to raise some funds with the help of our loyal fans for these venues who are really taking strain,” he added.

During the hour-long show Du Plessis said they are hoping to raise around R12 000, all of which will be split evenly among the pubs.

“Although we understand money is tight, any donations will be welcome, and go towards a worthy cause,” he said.

Through the fundraiser Black Wiskey will be entertaining their fans with song covers ranging from The Beatles to Taylor Swift.

Du Plessis said the lockdown has also been hard on the band as “musicians get withdrawal symptoms from not being able to perform”.

However, he said it had given them the opportunity to find alternative means to engage with their fans and have also helped them gain some new fans.

“Never in our wildest imaginations did we ever think we would be doing performances via Facebook but here we are, still trying to stay connected,” he explained.

Du Plessis confirmed he also penned a few new songs during the lockdown, and after the fundraiser they would be shifting their focus to recording the tracks as well as putting together their first full-length album.
