VIDEO: Murdered Kloof grandmother’s family and supporters stage protest against GBV

A group of people protesting against femicide and gender-based violence made their message clear outside the court.

THE man charged with the alleged murder of Kloof granny, Jenny King, over 18 months ago, returns to the Pinetown Regional Court for a pre-trial conference, today.

Family and friends of Jenny, and others protesting against gender-based violence (GBV), joined Jenny’s daughter, Lee-Anne King as they held up posters and boards with names of women from around the country who have died in cases related to GBV and femicide.

The protest highlighted the high rate of femicide and GBV in South Africa, which president Cyril Ramaphosa declared a new national disaster facing the country alongside the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Over the past few weeks no fewer than 21 women and children have been murdered… Their killers thought they could silence them. But we will not forget them, and we will speak for them where they cannot,” said Ramaphosa speaking in June amidst the escalating cases of GBV which has gripped the country.

In June alone than 30 women and children were killed in incidents of GBV.

Friday’s release of crime stats for 2019 by Police Minister Behki Cele is also sure to put a spotlight on this crime.
