Retrenched man volunteers at Kloof SAPS

Although losing his job might have caught Sarvesh Gounden off guard, he has decided to keep himself busy by volunteering his services at Kloof SAPS.

SARVESH Gounden is among the millions of people who have been retrenched due to the economic crisis created by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Instead of allowing self-pity to settle in, Gounden decided to keep himself busy by doing maintenance jobs at the Kloof police station on a voluntary basis.

The 30-year-old Reservoir Hills resident had a bright future ahead of him, working in the marketing department in the food industry.

“Losing a job came as a huge shock and it’s such a burden to carry. I just thought of things I could do to keep myself occupied and not stress too much.”

He said police are in the frontline and saw this as a perfect place where he can volunteer his services.

“I am very good with my hands, so I have pressure cleaned the station, I do some maintenance work and I help out wherever my services are needed.”

Gounden said he was excelling at his job and the sudden retrenchment affected him negatively.

To ward off the negativity, Gounden said he had started reading encouraging books to boost his spirit.

“I have accepted that this is the new norm, the entire world is suffering.”

Kloof SAPS station commander, Capt Yoga Gounden said it is so refreshing to see a young person giving his time willingly especially during this period.

“His heart is in the right place, he has done so much around the station. I wish him all the best in life,” said Capt Yoga.
