Cato Ridge shelter cares for voiceless

Clutz Cloete and Sue Campbell started the shelter after seeing the increasing demand to help and save the voiceless.

SINCE the beginning of lockdown, Cato Ridge duo, Clutz Cloete and Sue Campbell have experienced challenges while taking care of neglected and abandoned dogs.

Cloete and Campbell are the founders of RSL Dog Shelter and are currently looking after 107 four-legged friends. They Rescue, Save and Love their four legged family, hence they named their shelter RSL.

“We have always been animal lovers, feeding and helping the voiceless,” said Campbell.

“We do not re-home or adopt out because we have seen too many dogs back in the same or worse situations. Most of our dogs here have been sterilised and their inoculations are up to date.”

RSL feed the fur babies and families in the KwaXimba Township. “We also feed numerous street dogs along Eddie Hagen Drive, Inchanga and Cato Ridge.”

“We help the KwaXimba community with vet care, deworming, blankets, kennels and food. Where we are able, we give food to the elderly.

The animal lovers started their shelter after noticing that there is and will always be a demand to help and save the voiceless.

“We rescue our fur babies from bizarre situations and environments,” said Campbell.

Campbell said they have many memorable rescues but the one that truly reflects the work they do is the story of Eden.

“Eden was rescued from Winterton, abandoned, abused and left to fend for himself. He was completely blind in his left eye and had 20 per cent vision in the right eye, his right hip was broken/fractured and his transformation was absolutely phenomenal,” said Campbell.

According to Campbell, Eden was rescued on 17 January 2020 and his recovery and transformation was already showing in less than a month after he was rescued.

“We have seen an improvement regarding the dogs we are dealing with but there are so many out there that need help and assistance, it’s actually horrifying to see,” added Campbell.

The duo said they are in desperate need of an old van.

“It would be greatly appreciated if someone donated an old van, (we will include signage on it), we are also in need of food for the people and pellets for the fur babies.”

Campbell said they are also in need of building material such as blocks, roof sheeting, poles, fencing and timber.Anyone who would like to assist can contact Clutz on 071 492 1102 or Sue on 067 412 0721.
