Gelofte Skool appoints new principal

Misha Martin took over from Danie Strydom and has been an acting principal for a year before appointed officially as the new principal.

MISHA Martin was appointed as the principal of Gelofte Skool after serving as deputy principal for three years.

Martin took the deputy principal’s position at Gelofte after teaching at a school in Standerton for 16 years.

“Danie Strydom’s departure was unexpected but he made it easy for me to take over as he left everything in order and I have been an acting principal for the past year before being appointed officially recently,” said Martin.

He said his love for teaching developed in high school as he use to tutor his friends.

“Nothing or no one prepares you for those first days, weeks or months as a teacher. It is a process but it just came naturally to me. I love being around children and I find it easy to bond with them.

“Being a principal has it demands and that means Martin will spend a lot of time in the office but his wish is to be able to try and juggle his new role with a bit of teaching and coaching.

“After taking the position as an acting principal, I had to drop some of the subjects I was teaching and now I only teach Maths to the Grade 7s.”

Martin also coaches the primary school first rugby team.

“I am a very active individual who loves sport. I also coach cricket and athletics and always encourage children to also participate in sport,” he said.

The proud family man said he wants his positive attitude to reflect in what he does.

“I want to be a good leader and lead by example.”I am taking over from a very principled man. Mr Strydom was a mentor and I learnt so much from him.”

Martin is a husband and a father of two boys aged seven and three.

“My wife is a teacher so she understands my work and we support each other. Home and family are very important to me,” added Martin.
