Community gather to save Forest Hills Sports Club

In just two days, the club was able to raise more than R23 000 in donations.

AFTER a Help Save the Forest Hills Sports Club appeal was shared far and wide on social media recently, the local community rallied and raised more than R23 000 in two days to ensure the club’s survival.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Forest Hillcrest Sports Club (42 Forest Drive in Forest Hills) has been unable to operate and was severely affected financially.

As the club was unable to host functions, sporting events or social gatherings, no financial income was generated.

The appeal read: “We are asking for your assistance by way of donations in any amount or the club will be forced to close by the middle of July 2020.”The closure of the club will affect not only the sports club, but the community as a whole”.

The club’s chairman, Ian Wild, thanked those who donated.

“It is absolutely wonderful to see the overwhelming support of the members from the main club, all sub-sections and the community rallying to support the club so quickly. As a committee, we thank you greatly for your donations and your support during this time.”

He noted that the committee has, at its own expense, also painted, cleaned and refurbished the club house.

“When we are able to open up again, eventually, people will essentially be returning to a fresh, new club.”

The club requires a minimum of R7 000 per month to continue running. This cost includes municipal accounts, the alarm system and maintenance of the grounds.
