Neighbourhood watch concerned about crime spike

Head patroller, Marinus Du Plessis, said the criminals are now free to move around and are preying on law abiding citizens.

CRIME remains as a massive problem in society and with neighbourhood watches not being allowed to patrol, criminals are having a field day preying on innocent people.

Glen Park Neighbourhood Watch head patroller, Marinus du Plessis, said crime has started to spike again as people are now free to move around.

“Lots of home invasions and trespassing incidents have been reported. But the main incident involved a woman staff member from a school who was stabbed recently for a phone,” said Marinus.

“The criminals have been taking advantage of the schools being closed and vandalised the properties.”

He explained that in one of the incidents, an elderly man, who is not allowed to go out and work, was also a victim.

“The thieves stole his valuable equipment which he works with.

“The crime is there and happens everyday and we wish to appeal to officials to allow us to patrol and work with the police,” he said.

Marinus also raised the issue of the Glen Park railway station which has been a problem for many years.

“Most of the crime takes place around that area and they use it as a gateway route. Criminals hide in there as the grass is overgrown.

The neighbourhood watch and the community have on many occasions cut the grass and cleared that railway line for the safety of residents and commuters,” he said.

A concerned Marinus said it is so depressing that they can not be active yet as criminals are preying on law abiding citizens.

He pleaded with residents to stay alert at all times and be wary of their surroundings.
