Inaugural run in Durban brings out the best

Mpontsho Nodolo and Ntokozo Mkhize set the pace at the first KZN Best of Best Marathon at the weekend.

MPONTSHO Nodolo and Ntokozo Mkhize claimed victory in the inaugural KZN Best of Best Marathon in Durban on Saturday.

Mpontsho crossed the finish line in a quick 2.22.58 and scored a home-club win for the race organisers, Ama-Ravens Athletics Club.

The women’s race looked as if there would be a tight dice to the finish line as Ntokozo and Nalicy Chirwa matched each other stride for stride. Ntokozo upped her pace over the final few kilometres and crossed the line in 2.45.29.

While the women’s race was a tight tactical affair for much of the 42,2km distance, the men’s race turned into something of a one-man time trial after Nodolo broke away about halfway around the first circuit of the two lap course.

For a first-time event, there was a large entry of 2 500 runners. The bulk of the field aimed to qualify for the Comrades and Two Oceans Marathons as they signed up to compete in the full 42.2km marathon race.

Eventually, 825 runners beat the five-hour Two Oceans cut off while 790 of those were able to dip under the 4.50 mark, which is enough to earn a place on the start line for the Comrades Marathon in June.
