Woman dies following head-on collision on M1, Mariannhill

A woman died as a result of her injuries after arriving at hospital, while two other commuters were transported to a nearby hospital with minor injuries.

ONE woman, believed to be 50s, died after a horrific accident on the M1 in Mariannhill on Tuesday morning, while two others sustained minor injuries.

Paramedics responded to the head-on collision, just before Milky Way, at around 10am, said Rescue Care spokesman, Garrith Jamieson.

Earlier reports from the scene revealed the woman was found trapped in the wreckage, and paramedics worked to stabalise her while the fire department worked to extricate her.

“One of the drivers, a female, sustained critical injuries and while advanced life-support paramedics worked to stabilise her in the vehicle, the Durban Fire Department used the Jaws of Life to cut her free,” said Jamieson.

“Two other occupants from the second vehicle sustained moderate injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital,” added Jamieson.

The roadway remained obstructed due to the aftermath of the accident for hours following the accident.

Jamieson said SAPS were in attendance and would be investigating the cause of this accident.
