VIDEO: School taxi catches fire in Pinetown

Close call as school mini-bus transport goes up in flames

AUTHORITIES raced to scene of a fire in Willow Crescent in Pinetown after reports streamed in from residents that a minibus taxi used to transport school children had caught alight.

“Despite efforts from Blue Security’s fire extinguishers, the fire was too far gone to save the vehicle,” said Blue Security spokesperson Andreas Mathios.

The fire department arrived on scene shortly thereafter, added Mathios.

According Mathios, who was at the scene, “It’s alleged that the driver of the vehicle saw sparks and smoke coming from the engine and all of a sudden, the vehicle caught on fire. This taxi, that regularly picks up and drops children at school, is known in the area.”

“The vehicle was empty at the time and if the children had been in the vehicle, the outcome would’ve been more serious,” concluded Mathios.

eThekwini fire services remained on the scene with damping-down duties.
