Kearsney College rakes in weekend wins

The local school's cricket and water polo teams snapped up wins in their events at the weekend.

Cricket

Kearsney won 11 of the 12 fixtures played against St Charles on Saturday. For the Kearsney 1st XI, it was their fifth match of the week, after they were crowned the winners at the T20 Coastal finals on Friday.

Saturday’s 1st X1 game on Kearsney’s AH Smith Oval was played in hot, windless conditions and promised to be an intense encounter.

St Charles won the toss and decided to bat. The openers coped admirably with Kearsney’s seamers, but when captain Cade Carmichael turned to his four spinners, things went seriously awry for St Charles’ batsmen. St Charles was bundled out for 135 on what should have been a 240-run track.

Kearsney had the the worst possible start and were quickly reduced to 17/3 by a fiery K. Crawford, who bowled Louis Nel (0), Cade Carmichael (0) and had Jean-Luc Talbot caught at slip for three. Things looked dire for Kearsney, but Dylan Hulett smashed his way to 102*, assisted by Jared Uys (27*). Kearsney cruised to a 7 wicket win.

Water polo

Kearsney College water polo team welcomed St Charles for their first home game of the season.

Kearsney was missing a few regular A-team players as they were swimming at a gala in Pretoria. This was a chance for boys in the school’s water polo programme to prove their worth and step up.

Against St Charles’ 1st team, Wesley Marshall set the tone for the game with some great steals from the back that encouraged his teammates. The game was played in good spirits, with some well-worked goals that saw Kearsney win the encounter 15 – 3.

National selections

Five Kearsney College water polo players, Tyson Andrews (U18), Dimitri Diakogiannis (U16), James Francke (U15) and Blake Kruger and Ryan Sim (both U14), were selected for the national training squads.

Basketball

Kearsney hosted St Charles on Saturday with a large crowd keen to watch a match-up that has produced epic games over the years.

St Charles started well and Kearsney struggled to score in the early stages of the opening quarter. After some defensive adjustments, Ryan Wimbush single-handedly kick-started Kearsney’s offence and scored eight of his team’s 10 points in the quarter.

St Charles played some stifling defence in the second quarter and made scoring difficult for their hosts, who only scored three points. St Charles continued to keep up their consistent scoring and pulled away from Kearsney on the score board. The half saw the team change ends, with Kearsney trailing 30 – 13.

Kearsney played much better in the third quarter, but were unable to eat into the opposition’s deficit. In the fourth quarter, the hosts played their hearts out but were unable to erase the deficit they faced and lost 44 – 54.
