VIDEO: Calm restored under heavy police presence at Edgewood campus

The public order policing unit has been deployed to the campus.

PUBLIC information WhatsApp groups were abuzz this morning (Monday, 3 February) with warnings to motorists to avoid the UKZN Edgewood campus due to protest action by students.

One man, who didn’t want to be named because he said he feared the students might harm him, said the protesting students had attacked a security guard and taken a paintball gun off the guard.

Another bystander on the road outside the campus posted a video in which you can see students confronting the motorist who was taking the video.

The Highway Mail was informed that authorities were on the scene as of 9.30am today.

The above video was shared widely on social media and crime groups.  In it a student can be heard expressing astonishment at what is unfolding.

Pinetown SAPS communications officer, Colonel Thembeka Mbhele confirmed that the public order policing unit had been deployed to the campus.

Monty Esterhuizen who was in contact with patrollers on the scene updated the Highway Mail  just after 11am.

“It is quiet now. Saps and Metro public order police are in attendance at the gate.”
