Speaking to the Highway Mail on Friday evening, Fabby said the family was still reeling from the news.

“It comes in waves. Every now and then they hear something on the radio or think of something that reminds them of him. They are not coping,” he said.

The shooting had made headlines after it came to light that the family’s heroic Pitbull, Hunter was also shot in the incident while trying to protect his owner from the armed suspects.

Fabby said he had visited Hunter at the vet on Friday and the canine is said to be doing well.

“The veterinarian said they are hopeful that he will be able to go home as early as next week,” he added.

The Highway community was so moved by Hunter’s bravery that a crowdfunding campaign had been launched on Wednesday, 29 January to pay for his vet bills.

The family of the elderly resident had asked the Highway Mail not to publish his name as yet, and as a team we have chosen to respect their wishes. The Highway Mail team sends its condolences to the family, and are keeping them in our thoughts during this difficult time.
