Kidnap victim shares his story at Kloof Church

You can pre-book your tickets, but payment must be made at the door.

THE Youth Education and Support Trust, a non-profit organsiation that aims to support young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, will host Steve McGown (below) on Thursday, 6 February from 6pm at the St Agnes Church in Kloof.

After a seven-year working stint in the United Kingdom, Steve travelled on a motorbike from London to South Africa when he was kidnapped in Timbuktu. With him was a Dutch and Swedish national.

The year was 2011 and Steve was 36 years old. He was kept deep in the Sahara, away from French surveillance planes and drones and had limited communication with his family for six months. This ceased when the French military forces arrived in Mali.

Uncertain about whether he would live or die, Steve made a decision to not let the desperate situation get the better of him. Steve’s extraordinary story is about resilience and overcoming adversity amid harsh weather, a different culture, language and religion. Proceeds from the talk will go to the Youth Education and Support Trust.

The limited tickets cost R120 per person. To reserve your seats, contact Jill Storrar on 083 309 6211 or email yestrustnpo@gmail.com. Payment for the tickets must be made at the door.

Refreshments will be available before the talk and during a short interval.
