Pinetown couple stay united forever

The Bowers will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary later this month.

SEPARATED by the Group Areas Act when they were young, the Bowers were lucky to find each other years later and fall in love.

Evan and Veronica grew up as neighbours in the Durban CBD and were close friends.

“Due to the political situation, our families moved. My family (Indian) moved to Greenwood Park and Veronica’s family (Coloured) moved to Sydenham. Contact was lost for many years until by chance we were reunited,” said Evan.

The couple started dating in their 20s and got married on 27 December 1969 and had three children, two girls and one boy.

“We had a traditional Catholic wedding and the reception was held at my family’s home in Sydenham,” said Veronica.

When asked what has kept them together all these years, the couple attributed their beautiful union to their Christian faith.

“One of the reasons for achieving this milestone is our dedication to our Christian belief and lifestyle,” said Veronica.

“When I got married I only knew that you stay and make it work and you commit to what you believe,” Evan added.

The couple walk 5km along the beach every Saturday and enjoy building jigsaw puzzles together.

“We enjoy each other’s company. Evan does all the cooking and shopping because he enjoys it and I do all the crafts and handy stuff because that’s what I love,” said Veronica.

The Bowers will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with close friends and family at their home in Pinetown over a spit braai.

“But first church, we will go to our local church in the morning for a blessing,” said Veronica.
