#16DaysOfActivism: Councillors empower Motala Heights women against abuse

To commemorate 16 Days of Activism, local councillor Marlaine Nair highlighted the importance of reporting abuse.

TO commemorate 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children, the DA PR ward 15 councillor, Marlaine Nair, hosted a dialogue on abuse for the women of Motala Heights.

Each of the women who attended the event were encouraged to take a stand and help break the cycle of abuse by guest speaker, councillor and activist against abuse, Sharmaine Sewshanker.

Sharmaine shared her deeply personal experience with the gathered women and showed them that it was possible to break free.

“The holidays are an especially stressful period for families. It is even more stressful for those who live as victims of abuse. We hope that women will use the tips shared and protect themselves,” said Nair.

“Many women find it difficult to break free because they are financially dependent on their abusers. I would like to encourage all women, especially those who are being abused, to aim to be self-sufficient through pursuing a home businesses or any sort of hobby that can help generate income. Once women are economically emboldened, they usually have the courage to stand up for themselves and break free from being victims,” added Nair.
