Green thumbs celebrated at prize-giving

If you love gardening and would like to enhance your skills, join the Durban and Coastal Horticultural Society.

THE Durban and Coastal Horticultural Society hosted its annual Garden of the Year competition in Westville recently, an event that has been running since the late 1970s.

The Garden Judges Association, a sub-section of the society, completes its judging at the end of October and this year they visited 14 magnificent gardens dotted across Durban.

Filling in a judging sheet, the judges make their way through each garden and note if all of the criteria are met, from design and grouping to texture and colour.

There are 11 categories in which gardeners can win a trophy.

Local resident, Danna Flack snapped up three of the trophies that included best lawn, best large garden and Garden of the Year.

“We welcome people of all ages, from across Durban, to join our group. Our interest is gardens and to help encourage people to enjoy them as much as possible,” said the president of the association of Garden Judges, Phyllis Jenkins.
