Pinetown SAPS trauma room gets new look

BOXER superstores, in partnership with Crossroad KZN, supported the Pinetown SAPS Women Network structure in their efforts to fight gender-based violence with new items for the victim-friendly facility at the police station.

Items donated included a DVD player and videos for children, a sleeper couch, blanket and pillows, toiletries for the victims, toys and books for children, a floor rug and tables and chairs.

“The Station Commander of Pinetown, Brigadier Mandla Mhlongo, welcomed the donation and acknowledged that this gesture will help bring back dignity to the victims of gender-based violence in Pinetown,” said Pinetown SAPS spokesperson, Capt Bongumusa Manqele.

Marketing director of Boxer, Andrew Mills, believes the facility renovation will benefit those who need it most.

“President Cyril Ramaphosa has reiterated the importance of ending gender-based violence and violence towards women and children. A crucial step is assisting the SAPS with their efforts in this mission. A well-equipped, safe and comfortable place for victims to speak to our police officers goes a long way towards that,” said Mills at the official opening on Thursday, 14 November.

The Ubuntu Projects Programme is the CSR division of Boxer and community welfare is one of the key pillars of the programme.

A number of SAPS stations have been identified for victim-friendly facilities with Pinetown SAPS being the first to be completed.

The facility features a new TV, DVDs, literature and toys for children, soft toys, a sleeper couch, pink paint and a range of pillows, curtains and cupboards which create a peaceful and safe environment for victims of gender-based crimes.

The purpose of the facility is to provide a victim of a sexual assault or of gender-based violence a place of calm, where they can sit and talk to a helpful police officer about the incident they have experienced.

“I am proud of the work SAPS and Boxer have achieved together with Crossroads. We strive to uplift communities. Pinetown and the Highway area is the first community to benefit from this project and we are all excited about the future. We can all play our part in building and lifting our communities, with efforts like this, the sky is the limit towards an even better South Africa,” said Crossroads CEO, Mahindra Singh.

Six police stations including Mpumalanga in Hammarsdale will get an opportunity to get they facility renovated by the NPO in partnership with Boxer.
