Hillcrest Aids Centre Trust empowers minds of young women

The girl guides learnt about HIV/AIDS as well as the important work done by the Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust.

CANDACE Davidson, CEO of the Hillcrest Aids Centre Trust (HACT), was invited to speak at one of the 1st Hillcrest Girl Guides weekly meetings.

The girls made 10 gift bags for young children affected by HIV or AIDS and each bag contained finger puppets, playdough, a small blackboard and chalk – all made by the girls – as well as a lollipop and some chips. The group also collected old clothes and other items from HACT’s wish list.

Candace told the girls about the disease, its treatment and prevention as well as the high incidence of cases in South Africa and KZN in particular.

They also learnt about the many income generating projects organised for people and families affected by the disease.

Many questions were asked and answered afterwards.

This formed part of the requirements for the HIV Challenge badge of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS).
