The forum was started by former Pinetown Boys’ High learner, Sitholile Sithole, and its aim is to provide young people with opportunities to be active members in the community and to be mentored to gain the necessary skills to help them become future leaders.

The Youth Forum consist of learners from Pinetown Girls’ High School, Pinetown Boys’ High School, Westville Girls’ High School, Kloof High School, Bonela Secondary School and Ziphathele High School.

Learners from Grades 10 and 11 are invited to attend the monthly open meetings and, during those gatherings the schools have an opportunity to showcase their community service activities, share ideas and work together. On the day of the induction, learners were taught communication, memory and narrative skills.

Shreya Bugwandin, a Grade 10 learner at Westville Girls’, said being part of the youth forum has been a great experience for her as she has made many new friends. “I have learnt leadership skills and I am interacting better and understanding that each person is different and we should respect that and not judge them.”

“I love that we are encouraged to start initiatives and community projects to uplift people who are less fortunate than us. Since I have started with this forum, I have learnt to be more confident and today we did tasks that took us out of our comfort zone,” said Shreya.
