The Mineshaft 2019 results: Sunny day provides perfect conditions for event

Don't forget to join the Harriers at Queensburgh Sports Club on Saturday when they celebrate 40 years of the club being a solid part of the Burra!

WESTVILLE’s Chiltern Athletic Club has once again won the team prize at this year’s Queensburgh Harriers Mineshaft 15km event.

Sunday lived up to its name with the sun coming out and shining on the record turnout for the 15 km walk and run through the greater Queensburgh area.

According to Carl Hansen, a spokesman for the Harriers, the day was a success through the amazing combined efforts of all the various sporting bodies that call Queensburgh Sports Club home: “The committee and other club members worked well to host the best ever and have set the stage for big celebrations of the 40th Mineshaft next year!”

“Everyone came to the party to make the day a resounding success,” he said told the Queensburgh News on Sunday morning. “The four divisions of the club, Escombe Football Club, Queensburgh Sports club and bar, Queensburgh Bowls and The Queensburgh Harriers running club, all worked well together and the club is seeing growth.”

Hansen said the logistics of the say all ran smoothly. “The water tables had sufficient ice cold water and coke and friendly marshalls along the route. The weather even played on its best behaviour with ideal running conditions on the day!”

“We had a record 800 runners with all getting a performance t-shirt,” said Hansen. “Grant Nicholls and SPAR Main, Escombe, Sarnia and Hillary was a huge sponsor along with Pristine Water, Ice Promotions and Sportswear, Asics, Shell Ridley Park.”

Hansen said the Westville based, Chiltern Athletic Club won the prize from Spar just like they did last year. “This was the second time in a row after winning last year’s inaugural prize,” said Hansen.

Queensburgh Harriers, founder and committee member, Alen Hattingh who, along with the rest of the committee planning the celebrations for Queensburgh Harriers 40th anniversary, said the plan is to get as many of the members of the club over the years back together to celebrate the event.

“We will be celebrating in the form of at traditional South African braai, at the Queensburgh Sports Club on Bowker Road, on Saturday 14 September, starting at noon,” said Hattingh.

He asked all previous members to get in touch with him about attending if they haven’t yet done so. “Please ask all to contact Alen on 083 440 3135, or Trevor on 082 653 5651,” said Hattingh.
