Durban author launches new book

The book, which covers the sinking of the Oceanos cruise ship, is now available for purchase.

LOCAL author, Andrew Pike, shares a pertinent slice of South Africa’s history with the launch his book, Against All Odds, in Kloof and noted how its release has created various positive movements across the country.

The launch, hosted at Kloof Junior Primary School, was the last in a five-city tour and was the biggest one by far.

“Each one has been very different,” he said. “In East London, half of the people in attendance were survivors.”

He also discovered that an entire generation of people didn’t know about the rescue at all. “I wouldn’t want the story to die of old age,” said Andrew.

“Quite big pieces have emerged since the book’s launch as the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) will use the book to motivate for more, and better, resources for ship casualties and rescues along our coastline.”

Another theme emerged – for the civilians who aided in the rescue to receive bravery awards. “It has some unexpected spin off that I have been really excited about.”
