Pinetown couple share golden moments

MARRIAGE has it ups and downs but when you are bound by love and family, it makes it easier, said a Pinetown couple.

Pieter and Laura Halgreen, who celebrated their 50th anniversary recently, said the reasons they have had many wonderful years together is because God is the center of their lives.

Laura and her family moved to Durban and was Pieter’s neighbour.

“I only realised months later when I saw two girls (Laura and her cousin) and fell in love with Laura. I was with a music group and I was always away with them, performing,” said Pieter who was also a member of the Durban Men’s Choir for many years.

“We dated for two years before getting married at the Durban North Methodist Church. My wife is a beautiful and pleasant person,” he said.

Laura smiled and said Pieter’s features; tall, dark and handsome attracted her to him, “but one of the most important things in marriage is to be able to socialise together.”

After so many years together, Laura and Pieter still enjoy the same things, even their children feel that they have to make an appointment to see them.

“We have a very busy social life, we are members of dinner clubs, love music, bird-watching and enjoy walking,” said Pieter.

To celebrate their anniversary, the couple said they had the most beautiful party.

“We were joined by close family friends and the theme was gold to highlight our golden anniversary and we also renewed our vows. It was a very special day for us,” Laura said.

She advised young couples to never give up and honour their marriage vows.

They have three children and six grandchildren and an adopted daughter as all their children are overseas.
