Man arrested for hijacking Taxify vehicle

The two suspects abandoned the vehicle after crashing into a house while reversing.

A 25-YEAR-OLD man was arrested in Nazareth near Pinetown, with help from the community, on Monday night, (12 August) for a hijacking.

Pinetown Cluster communications officer, Capt Bongumusa Manqele said it is alleged the driver of a Taxify vehicle received a call to pick a client in Ashley.

“When the driver arrived in Holzner  Road, he met with two men who wanted to be transported to the Nazareth area.

“It is alleged the man who was seated in the back pulled out a gun in Mchunu Road, Nazareth. He ordered the driver of the car to stop and demanded the keys. The driver (22) was assaulted by both passengers before fleeing the scene,” said Manqele.

Manqele added that one of the men was arrested by the members of the community when they abandoned the car after it rolled into a nearby house.

The arrested suspect is expected to make his appearance in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court soon.
