Despite complaints, municipality does not repair sewerage pipe

MONTHS have gone by since business owner, Mark Minnie, reported a sewerage blocked pipe and sewage leak on Ottovolek Road in New Germany and he is still waiting for a clear plan of action from the municipality concerning the repairs.

According to Minnie, the same pipe was blocked and fixed by the municipality last year, but said that something went wrong in the process and the pipe wasn’t replaced properly.

The matter has been reported more than 10 times and at some time, the municipality’s system shows that there was a contractor who attended to the sewage leak and the case was closed. “Each time the system falsely closed the job and showed that the pipe was fixed, when in fact it wasn’t and I had to call again and get a new reference number,” said Minnie.

Last week, Minnie reported that a contractor came to his property and did what looked like an evaluation but nothing was communicated to him about the process.

Minnie would like more transparency and communication from the municipality.

“I would like to know how long it will take to have this fixed as for months we have been operating with no flushing toilets and a stinking sewage leak,” he said.

The eThekwini Municipality failed to provide comment at the time of publication, despite numerous attempts to obtain one.
