Keep your firearms safe to avoid reckless use

Police said safeguarding firearms could help reduce the number of unlicensed firearms.

HILLCREST police have encouraged the community to be more vigilant about safeguarding their firearms at home when not in use.

Hillcrest SAPS communications officer, Capt Linzi Smith said there has been an increase in housebreakings where firearms have been stolen.

“Securing firearms in terms of the Firearm Control Act is mandatory, but securing your safe in plain sight defeats the purpose. Keeping your safe bolted in an area or space that is not visible or predictable can assist in securing the firearms. Ensuring the safeguarding of the safe key is just as important,” said Smith.

She also advised gun owners to store their weapons at their closest firearm dealer if they are planning a vacation or getaway.

“With assistance from firearm owners, we can try and decrease the number of unlicensed firearms out there,” added Smith.
