Wine not! Crowds gather for tasty fund-raiser

One hundred guests supported the fund-raiser for the local non-profit organisation, The Upper Highway baby Home.

DOES there need to be a reason to have a glass of wine? Wednesday seems to be a good enough reason. No?

Let’s top that up with it being a Wednesday and funds were being raised for a worthy cause. Cheers to that!

One hundred guests gathered for the Wine Not Wednesday fund-raiser at the Augusta Country Estate Clubhouse to raise much-needed funds for the Upper Highway Baby Home. There was delectable wine tasting and a scrumptious light supper was served.

Based in Summerveld, the non-profit organisation looks after vulnerable and abandoned babies. The loving couple that launched the organisation saw the need and stepped up to help.

“We have six babies under five months old at the moment,” said the Upper Highway Baby Home’s co-founder, Kerry Stanton. “The newest addition is two weeks old. We do crisis care and take in children who have been abandoned.”

Her husband is a retired CEO and a qualified CA while Kerry also runs an environmental consultancy business to help fund the organisation.

“We wanted to get involved as the need is ridiculous. There are 30 000 abandoned babies each year in South Africa and only 3 000 are saved,” she said.

The cost to run the home averages at R50 000 per month. They use 53 bibs, 48 bottle feeds and 58 nappies a day.

“On average, there are three outfits and 18 changes a day,” so you can imagine how much laundry is done,” said Kerry.
