One killed, one arrested after a shootout in Hillcrest

The three men were stopped by police along M13 Highway when a shootout ensued.

HILLCREST police arrested a 26-year-old man for attempted murder, possession of suspected stolen property as well as a housebreaking and theft case that occurred in the area a week ago.

Police were conducting an operation aimed at crime prevention and arresting wanted suspects on yesterday morning (Wednesday, 5 June).

“While proceeding along M13 Highway, police officers spotted a vehicle with three occupants. Police instructed them to stop, they stopped and fled on foot into the bushes.  A shootout ensued which resulted in one suspect (25) being fatally wounded. A 26-year-old suspect was arrested. The third suspect fled into the thick bushes and managed to evade arrest,” said KZN police spokesperson, Capt Nqobile Gwala.

Gwala said police investigation revealed that the suspect’s vehicle was stolen from Hillcrest.

“It is alleged that a house in Ridge Road was broken into and a vehicle, household items and a handbag with valuables was stolen. A case of housebreaking and theft was opened at the Hillcrest police station for investigation,” said Gwala.

The arrested man has been charged for attempted murder and possession of suspected stolen property. He will also be profiled to determine if he can be linked to other related incidents.
