THROUGHOUT the history of games between Westville Boy’s High School and Maritzburg College, a win on Goldstones has always been a difficult thing to obtain, but on Saturday, 25 May after a hard fought game, the Westville 1st XV managed to hold on to their lead to win narrowly 28-26.

One minute into the game Westville were already onto the score sheet with a try through Mlungisi Khaleshwayo.

The try was unconverted but more points were to follow with Grove Akker kicking two penalties.

Westville were looking comfortable and clinical, however, College were to step up their performance and in the 25th minute replied with a converted try of their own. The score was to remain the same till half time 11-7 in favour of Westville.

Westville seemed to be camped for an age on their try line.

In the final moments, College were awarded a penalty in front of the poles to win the game, but inexplicably they turned it down and took a quick tap instead. Westville breathed a sigh of relief and tackled with renewed gusto.

College eventually knocked the ball on and Westville had survived the tidal wave and recorded a 28-26 victory on the hallowed Goldstones.

On the astroturf, Westville’s 1st XI Hockey team started the game at a great tempo and pegged back the home side early on and had most of the early running. They created one or two good chances, but nothing clear cut.

College eased their way into the game after withstanding the early pressure but also failed to create anything clear cut.

The second half started at a similar tempo with Westville starting the better of the two teams, they won themselves a few penalty corners, but failed to capitalise with the College goal- keeper pulling off some outstanding saves.

Westville won another penalty corner which they finally capitalised on, Luke Allen flicked low and this was half saved into the roof of the net by the College Stopper.

The fourth quarter started brightly and College equalised with a well taken goal to bring the game back to a deadlock.

Westville managed the latter stages poorly going down to 10 men twice and giving the opportunity to College.

Late on both teams had good counterattack opportunities but were poor in their execution. The game ended 1-1.
