M19 eastbound closed: Multiple casualties following serious accident

The road has been closed as paramedics deal with multiple casualties, some of whom are still entrapped. An Aeromedical helicopter has also come to help transport critically injured people to hospital after a head-on collision between a bakkie and a mini-bus taxi.

JUST before 2pm on Friday (24 May) the M19 had to be closed to traffic as responders worked to attend to multiple casualties following a head-on collision between a taxi and bakkie on the eastbound carriageway of the highway between Pinetown and Durban North bypassing Westville.

Although the advice sent out on emergency services groups is to avoid the area, there is reportedly one lane open at present for people already on the road.

This is a developing story which will be updated as more information becomes available.

Here are some photos sent to us by Blue Security spokesman and community videographer, Andreas Mathios.

Motorists travelling from Pinetown to the North of Durban should consider driving through Westville and going through Durban to take the M4 North, or take the Stapleton Road onramp to the N3 and join the N2 after the Pavilion to avoid the scene.

Rescue Care Spokesman, Garrith Jamieson has confirmed that the M19 is now (5.03PM) open.
